Improving Your Smile with Ultradent Opalescence® Take-Home Whitening Trays

When looking to brighten your smile, professional take-home teeth whitening systems are a simple, non-invasive method for providing beautiful results. Drs. Bolla and Cotter provide patients with whiter smiles with the Ultradent Opalescence® teeth whitening system.

Convenient Teeth Whitening

Opalescence® teeth whitening provides patients with a way to whiten their teeth without having to readjust their schedules for repeat trips to a dental office. After impressions of the patient’s teeth are taken, customized trays are made for at-home whitening care. Patients are then supplied with a special whitening gel to use at their own convenience.

Customized for Your Whitening Goals

In addition to the customized trays, the concentration of the whitening gel is based on the patient’s whitening goals. How long the Opalescence® trays are worn and which version of the whitening gel received is based on desired results; the higher the concentration and the longer the trays are worn, the greater the whitening effect.

Comfortable Teeth Bleaching
To provide for a comfortable whitening experience, the Opalesence® whitening gel contains potassium nitrate and fluoride to reduce tooth sensitivity. To encourage long-lasting results, the gel is specially formulated to prevent dehydration of tooth enamel, as well as shade relapse.

Preserving Your Beautiful New Smile

To ensure best results with Opalescence® teeth whitening, patients should avoid stain-causing beverages such as wine, coffee, soda and tea and foods like berries and soy sauce. Additionally, smoking can diminish the full effects of treatment.

When combined with a responsible oral hygiene regimen, the effects of Opalescence® are long-lasting. For quick touch ups, Drs. Bolla and Cotter also offer Opalescence® Go to use as needed.

5 Ways to Help Your Veneers Last

Veneers are an excellent way to completely transform your smile. To maintain the cosmetic benefits of veneers and keep your dental investment lasting as long as possible, try implementing these simple tips into your daily routine.

Practice Good Dental Health: In addition to keeping effective oral hygiene habits at home, visiting your dentist at least twice a year can help ensure your invest lasts well into the future. Patients should use a soft-bristle brush as well as non-abrasive toothpaste to prevent scratching or erosion of the veneer.

Maintain Soft Tissue Health: Advanced gum disease, known as periodontitis, can cause gum recession. This shrinking of the gum can compromise the appearance and stability of your veneers. Treatment for severe cases of gum disease may involve replacing veneers and soft tissue grafts for cosmetic and health benefits.

Avoid Bad Dental Habits: If you are a nervous nail biter, nighttime teeth grinder, or ice chewer, consider the effect those actions may have on your veneers. While the porcelain used for veneers is strong, it can still be damaged when subjected to repeated heavy force. Dental patients who grind their teeth, or chew on their nails can gradually weaken their veneers, causing cracks and chips. Being mindful of these actions can help you extend the longevity of your veneers.

Protect Yourself Against Dental Emergencies: When playing sports, individuals with veneers should wear a mouth guard to prevent or at least minimize the damage caused by accidental dental trauma. Additionally, patients who experience bruxism (teeth grinding) should consider a protective oral appliance as well.

Keep Your Smile Looking Fresh & White:  While porcelain veneers are stain resistant, natural teeth can become discolored over time, causing a color mismatch between veneers and your natural teeth. To prevent this change, veneer patients should avoid excessive exposure to stain-producing foods like wine, berries, and coffee, as well as smoking. If you notice that your natural teeth have become discolored over time, they can be brightened with cosmetic teeth whitening treatment.

Scheduling a consultation with our Port Huron cosmetic dentist can help you achieve a beautiful and functional smile with porcelain veneers. Contact our office today to learn more about what porcelain veneers can do for you.

The Health Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental Implants don’t just look good -- they also significantly contribute to your overall health. The strength and health of your teeth play an important role in maintaining your quality of life, as they are required for normal chewing, speaking, and maintaining facial structure. When you lose a tooth or multiple teeth, you may find that this has a negative domino effect on your overall health.

As a long-term restorative treatment, dental implants offer a multitude of health benefits, in addition to helping you regain confidence in your smile, which include:

1. Preserving the jawbone: As dental implants stimulate bone, they prevent it from further weakening. Healthy bone volume preserves facial structure and limits or prevents the characteristic facial collapse that occurs in patients with missing teeth. Without this stimulation, weakened bone fails to provide adequate support for other teeth, potentially leading to additional tooth loss and an overall worsening of the condition of your dentition.

2. Maintaining teeth alignment: When teeth are lost, the surrounding teeth begin to shift to fill in the gap. This shift can not only ruin prior orthodontic work, but can also disturb bite alignment. This triggers secondary issues, such as temporomandibular joint dysfunction and bruxism. Treating these additional issues can become complicated, depending on the extent of damage.

3. Protecting healthy teeth: Unlike other restoration options, dental implants do not rely on surrounding teeth for support. Dental implants stand alone, reducing the risk of damaging healthy teeth. This restorative option is less traumatic for your healthy, remaining teeth.

4. Improving oral health: Since dental implants are easy to care for, maintaining good oral hygiene is simpler than with other restorative solutions. Dental implants don’t require special adhesives or cleaners. Rather, patients with dental implants can maintain basic daily oral hygiene as usual and regularly visit their dentist to ensure the implants are functioning correctly.  Since dental implants are made of biocompatible materials, they look incredibly natural and are not subject to decay, like natural teeth.

With these benefits, dental implants are an excellent, functional alternative for missing teeth. Dental implants not only look natural, but function exactly like a normal tooth. If you are ready to improve your oral health with dental implants, contact our Port Huron implant.
